In June, Pride Parades take place worldwide, where people proudly exhibit their diverse identities and express love for their respective communities. It’s an opportunity to participate and demonstrate solidarity with the LGBTQ community and their rights by wearing outfits that carry a strong message. You can make a bold fashion statement while advocating gender equality and inclusivity.

Gone are the days when people were ashamed of their LGBTQ status as societies looked down on them. But they now have the freedom to proudly embrace their true selves and receive respect and recognition in almost every corner of the modern world. It’s a time when people can openly express their identity by wearing gay pride support shirts while expressing solidarity with the LGBTQ community.

With the Pride Parade event fast approaching in June, you might be preparing to celebrate it with your friends and family. But know about the history of the event as well.

History of The Pride Parade

Gay Pride, also known as LGBT Pride or LGBTQ Pride, celebrates lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) identities annually, mainly in June in the United States and occasionally in other countries. It honors the Stonewall riots, which broke out in the early morning of June 28, 1969, following a police raid on the Stonewall Inn pub in New York City’s Greenwich Village district.

Gay Pride traditionally consists of several activities, with a parade featuring marching members of the LGBTQ community and others who support them, as well as vibrant floats.

LGBTQ people often kept their sexual orientation or identity a secret before the Stonewall riots, but the incident inspired more political action (see the gay rights movement) and helped to galvanize the homosexual community. The first Gay Pride march was held during this period, with several hundred protesters marching along Christopher Street in Greenwich Village on the first anniversary of the riots in 1970 (although additional commemorations took place that year). Christopher Street goes past the Stonewall.

Gay Liberation Day

Early Gay Pride marches (commonly referred to as Freedom Day or Gay Liberation Day) frequently had low turnouts and drew complaints, partly because some marchers donned outrageous costumes. The rainbow flag, which is now arguably the most well-known representation of gay pride, had its debut during the San Francisco celebration in 1978.

At the San Francisco celebration in 1978, the rainbow flag, which is now arguably the most well-known emblem of gay pride, made its premiere. San Francisco artist Gilbert Baker created the flag now used worldwide. It includes eight colors, representing sexuality with hot pink, life with red, healing with orange, the Sun with yellow, nature with green, art with blue, harmony with indigo, and spirit with violet. Unfortunately, a six-color flag was used due to the unavailability of some of the cloth colors.

Why Do LGBTQ Holidays and Pride Celebrations Matter?

The LGBTQ community has expanded, and Pride celebrations have gained prominence.

Although excellent, a few things could be improved with this. The LGBTQ community must live in our truth and support one another throughout the year as we watch businesses sporadically join the movement for a few weeks.

Pride Month and related events are about more than just buying rainbow-themed merchandise and seeing funny Pride t-shirts from a moving vehicle. Pride is more than just a few summertime activities; it also matters for many other reasons.

Pride Brings Ease and Security

Pride Parade is a mass event that catches the attention of people worldwide. This helps in bringing much-needed ease and security to this community. There is an element of acceptability from everyone, which gives a comforting ease to the LGBTQ community and its supporters. Therefore, it brings a sense of security to the people belonging to the community.

Generates Awareness

Everyone is aware that there are homosexual individuals. But when we all talk about self-awareness, it refers to supporting openly gay individuals.

The second reason Pride is important to everyone is that it creates an environment and time for people to reflect on their actions and decide whether or not to support our community.

For instance, when Pride events and parades expand, and more LGBTQ allies participate, it demonstrates to people who aren’t outspoken supporters of minorities.

Builds Acceptance of LGBTQ Families

Pride Parade allows LGBTQ families and people to be widely visible, which is why it’s essential. For families and people that defy heteronormativity, pride is important. Though there is a wonderful online community for LGBTQ parents, people don’t frequently consider two-dad or two-mom families to be typical or to experience the same life events as hetero families.

Regional Pride celebrations draw families from all around, even if there may not be many LGBTQ families in small areas. Attend a local Pride event and find out if there are any same-sex couples with children in your region if you think there are few.

Embracing Diversity with Pride

It may sound funny, but the very reason Pride matters—celebrating individuals of all tastes, orientations, and cultures—is also why we dislike participating in many Pride-related activities.

The last time American parents took children to the Seattle Pride Parade, there were a lot of things going on that we wanted to avoid explaining to our young children.

Pride festivals involve more than just parading and demonstrating that you can face the world without fear.
